Fluid Ounces (fl oz)

Definition

A US fluid ounce (fl oz) is an imperial unit of volume equal to approximately 29.5735 milliliters. It is 1/128 of a US gallon.

History

The fluid ounce originated in the English apothecaries' system. The US fluid ounce diverged from the British imperial fluid ounce (28.4131 mL) when the US customary system was established in the early 19th century.

Current use

US fluid ounces are the standard unit for beverage serving sizes, nutritional labeling, and liquid product packaging in the United States. A standard drink (355 mL can) is approximately 12 fl oz.

UK Gallons

Definition

A UK gallon (imperial gallon) is a unit of volume equal to 4 imperial quarts, 8 imperial pints, or approximately 4.54609 liters. It is about 20% larger than a US gallon.

History

The imperial gallon was defined in the 1824 British Weights and Measures Act as the volume of 10 pounds of water at 62°F. It replaced the earlier English wine gallon (which became the US gallon) and the English beer gallon.

Current use

Imperial gallons are still used for fuel economy ratings in the United Kingdom and Canada (miles per imperial gallon). They occasionally appear in older British recipes and some Commonwealth country measurements.
